"Family Matters"

 "Family Matters"

By Sherri Welser

I have always loved family photos,, the very fun vintage style and hopefully you are lucky enough to have some also! I found a handful of vintage style family photos and wondered about the  unique ways I could display them. I had some wooden blocks from a previous project so I decided I would use them. I integrated  vintage style metal embellishments, ribbon and journal papers to create this special piece of art!

Supplies
 Proxxon Cordless Belt Sander BS/A
Copies of Family photos
2 x 4 piece of wood  cut to size
Tim Holtz metal vintage frame , feet , decorative corners and metal quote tags
Metal butterfly
Wooden rectangle with the word "family" on it
Distressed ink pad (from Ranger ) in Sepia
White paint
Clear knob
Art Journal papers with butterflies
Lace and ribbon
Small metal trinkets for embellishing
E 6000 and Mod Podge for gluing

  1. Sand the wooden block until smooth with the Proxxon belt sander
  2. Paint with white paint and let dry
  3. Distress  all sides with the Distress ink pad
  4. Place picture to fit in metal frame and place in the center of painted block
  5. Glue in place with E 6000 and let dry
  6. Add the wooden family piece underneath and glue in place
  7. Screw the knob in place at the top in center
  8. Add metal corner tabs,  metal butterfly  and  the feet at the bottom glue in place
  9. On the back glue the art journal butterfly papers  with Mod Podge
  10. Add the  metal lock and quote at the bottom  and glue in place with E 6000
  11. Distress the papers on the back with the ink pad
  12. Tie the metal embellishments to the ribbons and tie around the knob at the top

How to Build Your Own Butterfly House

Butterfly houses provide butterflies shelter from the weather and are a safe place for them to escape hungry predators. They help to attract and keep butterflies around your yard and garden. Butterfly houses also make an interesting addition to your outdoor space. Added plus—they are easy to  make with Proxxon tools.

Supplies and Equipment that you'll need:

Let's make the Butterfly House:

  1. Cut all boards to the measurements given in the Butterfly House pattern using the Proxxon table saw.

  2. Adjust the table saw's angle stop and cut the angles on the tops of the side pieces.

  3. Change the blade angle to 20° and cut the tops of the front and back pieces to match the angle of the side pieces.

  4. Transfer the slot pattern to the front panel.

  5. With the bench drill press, drill a pilot hole to accommodate the scroll saw blade.

  6. Cut out the slots using the scroll saw.
  7. Glue and clamp the bottom and back pieces together.

  8. Glue small branches and twigs to the inside back and side pieces. Hold the branches in place with painter's tape until the glue dries.

  9. Finish gluing the front and side pieces in place. Place a couple small nails along each side to reinforce the glue.
  10. Attach the roof with two hinges.
  11. Mount your butterfly house with hardware of your choice depending upon where you will hang your butterfly house.

Butterflies and Flowers Wall Hanging

Hi everyone Steph Ackerman here and I'm hoping and wishing for Sping.  With the new snowfall we recently got and with more on the way, I wanted to create a wall hanging that would have me thinking of Spring all the time.

I used the Delta Sander to sand a wood plaque I had in my stash.

Next, I added color to the plaque using Plaid Folk Art Ultra Dyes in Emerald City and Turquoise, blending the colors with a baby wipe.  I love how the dyes allowed the wood grain to remain visible after painting with Plaid Folk Art Ultra Dyes.  Originally I placed painters tape around the edges so the colors didn't run over the edges, but I decided to add the same colors around the edges after all.

Using Joy Clair stamps, I stamped a flock of butterflies on the left side of the plaque in black ink.  Then I used molding paste through several different stencils about the plaque.

Once the molding paste dried, I added some large flowers to the corner.  Then I added some butterflies created with Makin's Clay.

Finally I spritzed some Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist for some splotches of color.

The words are also stenciled on the plaque with molding paste.

Have I gotten you in the Spring mood yet?

Thanks for stopping by.

~Family Treasures~ Proxxon DT Project by WildHeart Art

~Family Treasures~

I am always looking for unique ways to do "the ordinary" so when I came across this wonderful family photo I wanted to find a fun  and unique way to display it. This is actually a picture of my Grandpa and Grandma with their children, my aunt and mom are on the end. I love the way I was able to capture the vintage feel of this project.

~Supplies~

2 x4( piece of wood - 5 x 4 rectangle)
White acrylic paint
Sepia ink pad
Antique glass door knob ( of similar)
Wooden rectangle with  the word "Family"
2 metal corner pieces
4 metal feet ( I used Tim Holtz metal feet)
Metal frame- 2x3
Family Photo ( I made a copy on the printer)
metal key hole
metal key
metal "phrase" (for the back)
butterfly collage paper
metal butterfly ( for front)
Assorted metal items,beaded chain,lace,thin ribbons,epoxy charm
Weldbond glue

1) Begin by taking your wooden block and sanding  with the Delta Sander to give a "worn look"
2) Paint the block white
3)"Distress" block with Sepia  ink pad on edges and gently on the front and back of block

4) Turn over and glue collage papers to the back that you have edged in the sepia ink.

 5) Add both the key hole and the metal phrase tag with the Weldbond glue

6) Distress the metal butterfly and the wooden piece "family"
7) Apply the picture and the frame to go over the picture  gluing everything down
8)Apply the feet by using the Weldbond glue

9)  Gather your metal charms and tags and attach ribbon and bead chain to them

 10) Add some lace ribbon to the top around the knob

11) Now add the ribbons, tags, charms and bead chain and hand then from the knob on top.

I hope you enjoy finding New ways to Do the Ordinary and create some wonderful memories and Family Treasures!

~In love and light~
